Devil Town

Davolja Varos, also known as the “Devil’s Town” was a nominee in the New Seven Wonders of Nature campaign. An extraordinary rock formation created by soil erosion is now a majestic top 10 places to visit in Serbia. Devil’s Town is found in the town of Kuršumlija in southeastern Serbia. The local legend pointed out that the reason for the bizarre formation and the irregular rocks shapes are the remains of a wedding party that had instantly petrified by the devil, as punishment.

However, scientists believe that a natural spring is located beneath the formations and has a high mineral concentration. Djavolja voda or devil’s water is extremely acidic water that also contributed to this unique geologic phenomenon.
